The "Grand Challenges in Medical Education 2024" symposium took place on November 28, 2024, at the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. This landmark event brought together leaders from the China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals, government representatives, academics and medical professionals from Hong Kong to discuss advancements and challenges in medical education technology (EdTech) and pedagogy.



Highlights

·         Keynote Lectures: Prof Du Bin, Vice President of Peking Union Medical College Hospital, presented a history of the development of the China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals, while Prof CS Lau, Interim Vice-President & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health) and Dean of Medicine, HKU, gave an overview of the evolution of medical education since the release of the Flexner Report.

·         Innovative Sessions: Covered topics such as AI governance in healthcare, student-led curriculum design, and the use of AI patient simulations for diagnostic training.

·         Roundtable Discussions: Explored the integration of educational technology into teaching practices and the implementation of innovative programs like SIMHSE (Student in Medical and Health Sciences Education).


The symposium concluded with a call to action for educators and institutions to embrace technological advancements in order to prepare future healthcare professionals for an increasingly complex medical landscape.  The insights gained are expected to inform ongoing efforts to enhance medical training.

We are excited to unveil the second episode of Learn Together @HKUMed, “How to Teach and Learn Effectively from a Teacher’s Perspective”! 



In this episode, our host, Professor Linda Chan, Clinical Assistant Professor from the Bau Institute of Medical and Health Sciences Education (BIMHSE) and the Department of Family Medicine and Primary Care (FMPC), welcomes two distinguished guests, Professor Julie Chen who is also from BIMHSE and FMPC, and Professor Brian Chung from the Department of Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.  Both are recipients of the HKU Outstanding Teaching Award and are deeply passionate about medical education.  They will provide insights from a teacher’s perspective on supporting student learning and offer practical tips for students on how to learn effectively.
