We’re thrilled to share the highlights from our recent Clinical Near Peer Teaching Programme!

From July to October 2024, 25 fifth-year medical students at HKUMed taught and supported fourth-year medical students in physical examination and clinical skills. Thanks to the supportive environment created by our near peer tutors (NPTs), clinical year students experienced increased interaction and collaboration with other students and felt less anxious when performing physical examinations!

With the NPTs’ guidance, students had great exposure to various clinical cases, strengthening their conceptual understanding and hands-on practice.

In our debriefing, the NPTs shared creative solutions to further improve learning experiences and that their role as tutor contributed to their own growth as well. A huge thank you to our fantastic NPTs and coordinators for making these sessions possible. We‘re excited for more sessions in the future!

Congratulations to the 2024 recipients of the Poon Li Wai Hing Award for Student in Medical and Health Sciences Education! This prestigious accolade not only recognises the unwavering dedication and remarkable contributions of the awardees to promoting education, but also highlights students’ significant influence on the academic community at large.

We hope that the impact our awardees have made will resonate among the students of HKUMed, fostering a culture of active participation in curricular and professional development. Their work can inspire the coming generations of students to pursue more effective delivery of education through innovative means and raise the awareness of social responsibility in the student body.

Following the symposium, a workshop was held at the Technology Mezzanine (TechMezz) featuring three engaging sessions that showcased the integration of advanced technologies in medical education to the delegates from the China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals:

  • Prof Gary Lau, along with MBBS students Jason Chan and Kelvin Cheng, demonstrated the KASES (Knowledge and Simulation Education System) Chatbot, showing its capability in training students’ clinical reasoning and communication skills.

  • Prof Pauline Yeung presented Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) techniques, highlighting their practical applications as tomorrow’s stethoscope in clinical settings.

  • Dr Jian Yang showcased Virtual Reality (VR) and the Anatomage Table, illustrating their potential to revolutionize anatomy education.

The workshop successfully highlighted the role of technology in transforming medical education, fostering an environment where students can learn effectively and prepare for future challenges in healthcare.
